SAG Awards 2013 Winners: 'Argo' Takes Top Prize; Is Best Picture Oscar Next?

Is “Argo” now the Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture? It certainly looks that way after the film won the top prize at the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. This would be an impressive feat for the film, considering its director, Ben Affleck, got snubbed from the Academy Award nominations for Best Director earlier this month (the last film to come away with the Best Picture Oscar without a Best Director nominee was “Driving Miss Daisy” in 1989). “I am really amazed and stunned, there are so many great actors here and this is voted on by our brothers who are actors,” Affleck said while accepting the SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. “There’s a hundred and some thousand people in SAG-AFTRA. Some of them never get, you know, to come to a place like this. And they vote from home, you know.” The top SAG acting prizes were awarded to favorites Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln” and Jennifer Lawrence for “Silver Linings Playbook,” while Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Hathaway snagged prizes for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role, for “Lincoln” and “Les Miserables” respectively.
